Description

A near-black graphite ground carries an all-over lattice of oval cartouche forms and scrolling vine connectors in silver-grey and powder-blue, repeating continuously from one end of the runner to the other without a focal axis or center point. A narrow charcoal border with a cornflower-blue scroll unit holds the field along all four edges. The lifestyle image shows the runner occupying the full length of a long interior passage between distinct seating zones.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Roach Long · the asked & answered
How does an all-over repeat pattern perform structurally in a long runner format under daily foot traffic?

An all-over repeat without a focal center distributes compression evenly along the full length, which is an advantage in a runner used across its entire surface daily. Hand-knotted wool at medium pile recovers well from foot traffic compression. Rotating end-to-end every six months further equalizes wear between the higher-traffic central zone and the quieter ends.

How wide should a runner be for a long interior passage, and how much floor should remain visible?

A 2.6-foot width suits most residential corridors and longer open passages. Leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side so the floor material reads beneath the runner rather than being fully covered. In very wide passages, a slightly wider custom runner may be appropriate. A non-slip pad cut to the runner dimensions is recommended on all smooth floor surfaces.

Does the near-black graphite ground show wear patterns more visibly than a mid-tone ground would?

Dark grounds show pale lint and fiber accumulation readily but do not reveal compression wear as visibly as lighter grounds. Weekly low-suction vacuuming without a beater bar addresses surface accumulation. Compression wear from foot traffic is more visible in the pile texture than in the color on dark grounds; rotating end-to-end every six months keeps the texture even along the full length.
