Description

A pale cornflower-blue field carries a symmetrical vine composition in ivory-white and warm brown, its paired scrolling arms distributing open peony-like flowers, serrated leaf clusters, and small tulip forms at measured intervals from a central vertical axis. A wide ivory-cream border holds a secondary floral and cartouche repeat in the same warm brown and soft dusty-rose tones. The close-up shows the wool pile at sufficient depth to give each motif a soft internal relief against the blue ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Gravel · the asked & answered
How does the symmetrical vine composition hold its visual balance when partially covered by large furniture?

The paired arm structure means that obscuring one part of the vine with furniture does not disrupt the legibility of the overall composition, since the symmetrical half continues visibly on the other side. At 9x12 and 10x14, placing a sofa along one edge with front legs on the rug keeps the central vertical axis and the majority of the vine field visible from the primary seating position.

What interior combinations work best with this cornflower-blue and warm brown palette?

Dark walnut or oak timber floors and cabinetry create a strong tonal contrast with the blue ground that reads well in large living spaces. Upholstery in warm ivory, linen, or natural leather connects to the warm brown motifs. Rooms with stone or plaster walls keep the rug's cool ground as the room's dominant chromatic statement at floor level.

How does a medium-pile all-wool rug of this scale feel underfoot, and does pile height affect durability?

Medium pile provides a firm but cushioned surface underfoot with good resilience under daily residential use. The knots sit at a depth that absorbs compression without flattening permanently. Using furniture leg pads under heavy pieces and rotating the rug annually prevents localized pile compression from becoming permanent in fixed furniture positions.
