Description

Pale powder-blue holds the dominant ground, interrupted by large cloud-like masses of warm sand-beige and taupe-brown that move through the field without fixed edges. The blue and beige zones are separated by narrow passages of off-white that trace between them, giving the composition its only linear quality. The close-up reveals a highly textured surface: the beige masses carry a raised, coarse pile distinct from the smoother blue ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Cirrus · the asked & answered
Does the hi-low pile difference between the blue ground and the raised beige masses cause uneven wear over time?

The two pile heights are built into the knotting structure and wear at rates proportional to their respective heights. The raised beige masses, being higher, may show the first signs of compression before the lower blue ground. Rotating the rug annually distributes this wear evenly. Using furniture pads under heavy legs prevents localized compression in either zone.

How does the powder-blue and warm beige combination work in a room with terracotta upholstery and warm wood?

The powder-blue provides cool contrast against terracotta and warm oak, keeping the rug from blending into the warm palette of the room. The sand-beige and taupe masses connect the rug to the wood and upholstery tones, so the composition bridges both temperatures simultaneously. The 9x12 anchors a large L-shaped sectional arrangement well, as the lifestyle image shows.

Is the textured beige surface more prone to trapping dust or debris than the smoother blue ground?

The raised pile in the beige masses does accumulate more surface debris than the lower blue ground due to its coarser texture. Low-suction vacuuming without a beater bar is sufficient to maintain both zones. Vacuuming the raised beige areas in a consistent direction keeps the surface texture even and prevents debris from embedding into the pile base.
