Description

Sage-green, dusty rose-pink, warm terracotta-amber, and deep plum-wine move across a pale cream-white ground in broken, stippled masses with no dominant colour holding the field. A thin grey-green diagonal line runs through the upper third, the only mark with any linear character in an otherwise cloudlike composition. The pale ground remains visible throughout, interrupting every colour zone.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Lichen · the asked & answered
With four distinct colours scattered across a pale ground, does this rug show wear unevenly in high-traffic zones?

Wear in hand-knotted rugs follows pile compression rather than colour distribution, so the scattered colour pattern does not affect where wear develops. High-traffic paths show flattening regardless of which colour sits there. Rotating the rug annually redistributes traffic across the field and prevents any single zone from wearing faster than the rest.

How does the sage-green and terracotta-amber palette work with white plaster walls and pale wood floors

The pale cream ground reads closely with white plaster, allowing the four colour zones to carry the room's full colour interest without competing with the walls. Terracotta-amber connects with pale oak; sage-green introduces a botanical note that works with natural linen and dried plant arrangements. The 9x12 suits a single accent chair and sofa arrangement in a room of this material restraint.

Does the scattered cloud-like composition look different when viewed from different positions in the room?

Yes, and this is one of the design's qualities. The silk within the pale ground passages catches at different angles depending on where you stand, so the open cream intervals shift in reflectivity as you move around the room. The colour zones themselves remain consistent, but the surface carries a different quality of light from each viewing position.
