Description

Fine ink-black lines radiate across a warm straw-gold ground in branching, splattered trails, gathering at the centre into dense pools of slate-blue grey and near-black. The pale straw ground dominates the outer field, keeping the composition from closing in on itself. Silk rises at the silver-white passages between the marks, while wool holds the grey and black concentrations lower and heavier.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Splatter · the asked & answered
The central zone is very dense with overlapping marks. How does this area hold up under foot traffic?

The dense central zone is knotted in wool at the lower pile plane, which gives it good structural resilience under regular use. Wool handles compression well and maintains its surface integrity over years of foot traffic. The silk passages within this zone are more delicate but remain well-supported by the surrounding wool knots.

This design has a strong central composition. How should furniture be arranged to let it read properly?

The 10x14 gives the full composition the most room to breathe, with seating placed around the outer field rather than over the central mass. For the 9x12, position the main sofa so the central concentration remains visible from the primary seating angle. Avoid placing a large coffee table directly over the densest part of the centre field.

The warm straw-gold ground is the largest surface area. How does it wear and clean over time?

Warm straw-gold wool holds its colour well under indoor conditions and does not show everyday dust as readily as pale ivory grounds. Vacuum regularly on low suction. For spills on the wool ground, blot immediately and allow to air dry. The silk passages within the field require more care; blot only with a dry cloth and avoid any liquid cleaners directly on silk pile.
