Description

A warm parchment-ivory ground carries a large mirrored field composition of scrolling slate-grey branches, terracotta vine lines, and cornflower blue florals, with amber-yellow stem work threading through the field. Two dark charcoal arabesque forms dominate the center axis. A near-black border packed with small blue, orange, and ivory florals frames the field with strong contrast.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Ivorycanopy · the asked & answered
The design has many fine branching lines running across the ivory ground. How does this level of drawing hold up in a hand-knotted wool rug over years of use?

Fine branch lines in hand-knotted wool stay defined because each color change is fixed at the knot level rather than printed or applied to the surface. The lines soften very slightly as the pile compresses with use, which reads as natural aging rather than degradation. The composition remains legible throughout the rug's lifespan.

The ivory field and near-black border create strong contrast. Does this contrast change noticeably as the rug ages?

Both light and dark wool tones develop a gentle patina with use, but the contrast ratio between them stays consistent because both grounds shift in the same direction. The ivory may warm slightly; the near-black may soften. Neither change affects the structural relationship between field and border in any significant way.

This rug works in a room with warm wood paneling and leather furniture. What size suits a full living room arrangement of that kind?

A 10x14 anchors a full seating group in a wood-paneled room, allowing the ivory ground to read clearly between and beneath the furniture. A 9x12 works where a tighter arrangement is preferred, with front legs only on the rug. Both sizes allow the mirrored field composition to read as a complete design.
