Description

A blue-grey field carries scattered geometric and figurative motifs: square cartouches, ivory cross-forms, small animal figures, and amber gold flower heads across an open ground. A wide parchment-ivory border holds a dense geometric repeat of diamonds, brackets, and small florals. The close-up reveals a fine, tight pile with excellent knot definition on the grey surface.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Scatterfield · the asked & answered
How does a low pile hold up in a living room with regular foot traffic and furniture?

Low pile wool in hand-knotted construction is among the most durable configurations available. The shorter fiber compresses less under furniture and foot traffic, and the knot structure stays tight over years of use. The surface wears evenly and develops a slight patina rather than degrading.

The field motifs are scattered and asymmetric. Does this make the rug harder to orient in a room?

The open, non-directional field actually gives more placement flexibility than a medallion or formal repeat. The rug reads consistently from any angle, so furniture arrangement and room entry point do not affect how the design reads. Standard sizes from 8x10 to 10x14 all work well in living and drawing rooms.

The pile looks very tight and fine in close-up. Will this rug shed at all?

Low pile, tightly knotted wool sheds significantly less than medium or high pile constructions. Some initial fiber release is normal in the first few weeks; this stops quickly with regular low-suction vacuuming and does not affect the surface quality or knot integrity.
