Description

A near-black charcoal ground carries an allover field of large floral medallions in terracotta-red, ivory, straw-gold, and cobalt-blue, connected by flowering vines and smaller rosettes. Each medallion differs slightly in colour and form. The border shifts to a warm mid-grey ground with an ivory scroll vine and red flower heads, creating a clear separation from the dense dark field.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Coalground · the asked & answered
With so many saturated colours on a dark ground, how does this rug hold its palette over years of use?

Wool dyed in deep colours holds pigment well under normal indoor conditions. The near-black charcoal ground and the saturated reds, golds, and blues all maintain their relationship over regular use. Avoiding prolonged direct sunlight is the most important factor in preserving colour depth across the full field. Rotate annually to keep wear even.

The pattern is very dense. Does this affect how the rug performs underfoot compared to simpler designs?

Density of pattern does not affect pile performance. The wool knots are tied at the same density across the full field regardless of colour changes within the pattern. A densely patterned hand-knotted wool rug performs identically to a plain one in terms of durability and underfoot feel. The pile height and knotting quality determine performance, not the number of colours.

What room and furniture style suits this design best?

The near-black ground and full-colour palette suit rooms with strong materials: dark leather upholstery, walnut or ebonised wood, concrete floors, or exposed brick. The 9x12 works well with a single large sofa and two chairs. The 10x14 suits a full seating arrangement where the rug anchors a larger room without disappearing under the furniture.
