Description

Warm parchment-beige holds the ground, divided by thin pale lines into loosely defined rectangular sections. A large rounded form in cool silver-grey occupies the centre-left of the field, its curved edge dissolving into the beige ground without a hard boundary. The hi-low construction places the silk in the grey form at a raised plane, giving it a dense, eroded texture clearly distinct from the flatter wool ground around it.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Orb · the asked & answered
How does the large raised silk form maintain its edge definition against the wool ground over time?

The boundary between the grey silk form and the parchment wool ground is built into the knot sequence, not applied to the surface. The dissolved edge is intentional and holds its character under normal use. The raised silk interior of the form stays defined because the pile height differential is structural; it does not require surface treatment to maintain.

What size and room placement best suits this single-form composition?

The 10x14 gives the rounded form enough floor space to be read fully from across the room, as shown in the loft context. The composition is asymmetric, with the form sitting left of centre; positioning the rug so the primary sofa faces the form rather than covering it keeps the design readable. The 9x12 works in more contained rooms where the full rug perimeter sits within the seating arrangement.

How does the hi-low construction between the warm and cool zones behave under different light conditions?

The silk in the grey form catches directional light while the wool ground absorbs it. Morning and evening light read the surface differently, with the form advancing or receding depending on the angle. This is characteristic of the construction and part of what the design offers. Regular low-suction vacuuming keeps the silk surface clear so this tonal behaviour stays consistent over time.
