Description

A band of warm sand-beige rectangles runs horizontally across the upper-centre field, each cell carrying dark charcoal marks, smudged forms, and faint crimson traces. The lower field opens into pale oyster-white, nearly bare except for scattered ink-black rings and vertical dashes. Silk raises the pale open ground while wool holds the denser marked band lower.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Ledger · the asked & answered
How does the contrast between the dense marked band and the open pale field hold up over years of use?

Both zones are hand-knotted in wool at the lower pile plane, with silk raised above. The wool base in the denser band maintains its colour depth and definition well under regular use. Rotating annually ensures neither zone compresses faster than the other, keeping the contrast between them intact.

Where should furniture sit relative to the marked band and the open lower field?

For a 9x12, placing the sofa along the upper edge keeps the marked band visible and the open lower field in front of seating. The 10x14 gives a larger arrangement room to sit fully within the field. Avoid placing heavy furniture legs directly over the denser marked zone for extended periods.

Is the pale oyster lower field prone to showing everyday dust and debris?

Pale wool does show fine dust more readily than darker grounds. Regular vacuuming on low suction without a beater bar keeps the surface clean. The silk-raised field does not trap debris the way looped or shaggy constructions do. For spills on the pale zone, blot immediately with a dry cloth only.
