Description

Ink black grounds a Mamluk-style geometric medallion composition where ivory micro-floral fill, warm tobacco gold, and powder blue octagonal panels organize every zone of the surface with extreme density. A silver-grey inner border separates the field from the outer black register, which carries its own continuous small-scale ivory repeat. The close-up pile shows the full depth of the color contrast: each ivory motif reads as drawn against the black with precision.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Forge · the asked & answered
Does an ink-black wool rug show dust and light debris visibly with daily use?

Black grounds show pale debris more readily than mid-tone surfaces. Weekly vacuuming on low suction, without a beater bar, clears the surface before debris settles into the pile. The dense hand-knotted construction holds its color well and does not fade with routine maintenance, keeping the contrast between ground and motif consistent over time.

What upholstery colors work best alongside an ink-black ground with ivory and tobacco gold patterning?

Burnt orange, terracotta, and deep rust upholstery connect directly to the tobacco gold in the pattern without requiring an exact match. Ivory and off-white seating lifts the palette by echoing the motif tones. Both approaches keep the rug as the dominant surface without the furniture competing against it.

How does this rug perform structurally under the weight of a large sectional sofa over time?

Hand-knotted construction ties each knot individually into the foundation, making the pile resistant to the sustained compression of heavy furniture. Placing furniture coasters under sofa legs distributes load across a wider area and reduces localized pile flattening. Rotating the rug every 12 months keeps wear even across the full surface.
