Description

A deep navy field carries a large-scale botanical scroll of oversized rosettes, lobed leaf forms, and animal figures including lions and an elephant in warm gold, terracotta, dusty teal, crimson, and ivory. The vine runs loosely on the dark ground, and a central cypress-like form rises through the composition. The terracotta border holds a running floral repeat in ivory and pale blue. Medium pile reads dense and full in the close-up.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Prowl · the asked & answered
How does the navy ground change the reading of figurative motifs like the animal forms compared to a lighter ground?

On a dark ground, figurative motifs emerge from depth rather than sitting on a surface. The warm gold and terracotta tones of the animal forms carry maximum contrast against navy, so the figures read with strong presence. On an ivory ground the same forms read as part of a botanical scatter; here they carry individual weight.

What wall colors and furniture tones suit a deep navy botanical rug with a terracotta border?

The navy and terracotta combination reads well against warm neutrals, burnt orange upholstery, and dark wood furniture, as the room context shows. White or plaster walls provide the contrast needed to let the navy field read as deep rather than heavy. Cooler blue or grey walls would reduce that contrast and flatten the composition.

Is a medium-pile hand-knotted rug suitable for a room with polished concrete or terrazzo floors?

Medium-pile wool sits well on polished hard floors with a quality non-slip underlay. The underlay prevents the rug from shifting under foot traffic and furniture movement, protects the floor finish from friction, and adds cushioning beneath the pile. Without an underlay, any rug on a polished floor will migrate over time regardless of weight.
