Description

Near-black charcoal fills the field, structured by a lattice of fine ivory stems that divide the surface into panels, each holding large open palmettes and sunflower-like florals in terracotta-red, warm sand, dusty steel-blue, and sage green. The border steps to pale parchment ivory, wide and dense with scrolling paisleys and rosettes. Pile reads medium, full and well-resolved.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Cresset · the asked & answered
Does the ivory lattice on a near-black field show scuffing or surface marks more than a solid-ground design would?

The lattice lines are woven into the pile at the same height as the surrounding field, so they do not sit proud of the surface or attract additional wear. Hand-knotted construction secures both the dark ground and the ivory stems equally. Regular vacuuming on low suction keeps the surface even and prevents fine debris from settling into the dark pile between the lattice lines.

How wide should the border clearance be when placing furniture on this rug?

The wide ivory border reads best with full visibility on all sides. Leave at least 18 to 24 inches between the border edge and the wall. Position front furniture legs on the dark field rather than on the border to keep the ivory ground clean and uncompressed. The 9x12 and 10x14 sizes give enough field area to achieve this comfortably.

Does a near-black wool field show pet hair or lint more visibly than a mid-toned ground?

Dark grounds show light-colored debris more readily than mid-toned or dark-patterned fields. Regular vacuuming every week or two on low suction without a beater bar manages this effectively. Wool's textured pile surface means debris tends to sit on top of the fiber rather than embedding immediately, making it straightforward to remove with routine care.
