Description

An ivory field centers a large lobed medallion in terracotta and warm gold, its interior carrying a secondary floral rosette in dusty blue and cream. The terracotta border runs a dense repeat of full-bloom rosettes and scrolling vines in gold, sage, and pale blue. The matte wool pile reads medium and even in the close-up.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Rowel · the asked & answered
Does the ivory field in a hand-knotted wool rug mark more easily than darker grounds, and how is it maintained?

Ivory wool grounds show surface dust more readily than mid-tone grounds, but respond well to regular low-suction vacuuming. Wool fibers resist absorbing spills if blotted immediately. Annual professional cleaning keeps the ground color consistent across the full field.

What room size suits a medallion-format rug, and which dimensions work best for this design?

Medallion compositions read best when the full field is visible from the room's main sightline. The 9x12 works in a living room where seating sits at the perimeter of the medallion. The 10x14 gives the design more breathing room and suits formal drawing rooms or larger dining spaces.

Does the medium wool pile height affect how the rug feels underfoot compared to lower-pile options?

Medium pile provides noticeable cushioning underfoot and a softer surface than low-pile rugs. Wool at this height recovers well from compression under furniture legs, though placing felt pads under heavy pieces helps prevent permanent indentation over time.
