Description

A soft yellow-green ground carries the same large-scale open vine scroll, its sweeping arms, spiral rosettes, and crescent forms rendered in brick red, dusty coral, ivory, dark chocolate brown, and powder blue against the fresh field. The dark chocolate brown crescent arms cut through the center field in bold arcs. A medium grey-green border on the same tonal family closes the field through dense scrolling vine and floral work.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Fennel · the asked & answered
How does the dark chocolate brown used for the large crescent forms affect the overall palette of this green-ground design?

Dark brown against yellow-green creates a contrast that reads as earthy rather than sharp. The brown sits in the same warm tonal family as the green, so the contrast registers as depth rather than a hard color break. This keeps the palette cohesive across a range of viewing distances: the full arcs read clearly far away, while the field's finer detail becomes visible up close.

Does a yellow-green ground work in a room with white walls and pale wood flooring, as shown in the lifestyle image?

Yes. The yellow-green sits in the warm half of the green spectrum, which reads comfortably alongside white plaster, pale oak, and natural rattan without the coolness that a blue-green ground would introduce. In the lifestyle image, the rug grounds a bright, open room without competing with the pale surrounding surfaces.

The field and border are both green but different tones. Does this create a noticeable visual seam?

The slight tonal difference between the yellow-green field and the cooler grey-green border reads as a transition rather than a contrast, giving the composition a defined edge without a hard boundary. On pale floors, both green tones stand apart from the surrounding surface clearly, making the rug's shape and perimeter fully legible.
