Description

Deep crimson lines move through the field in broken rectangular paths, accompanied by powder blue traces, faded blush-pink passages, straw-yellow zones, and near-black charcoal marks. All of this sits against a cool silver-grey ground. The close-up reveals dense wool knots at the crimson and charcoal zones, with silk raising the grey ground into a textured, reflective plane between the coloured elements.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Fresco --check · the asked & answered
With so many colours in the field, how does the wool hold its pigment depth over regular use?

Wool knots at the lower pile plane hold dye well and resist fading under normal indoor conditions. The deeper crimson and charcoal zones, being densely knotted in wool, maintain their colour over years of regular use. Keeping the rug out of direct sustained sunlight preserves the full palette across all zones.

This design carries a lot of visual complexity. What interior setting keeps it from feeling crowded?

The design reads most clearly in rooms with restrained surroundings: plain plastered or stone walls, simple furniture silhouettes, and minimal decorative objects. The 9x12 anchors a standard living room seating group. The 10x14 gives the composition more breathing room in larger or open-plan spaces.

How should the different colour zones, particularly the pale blush and silver-grey silk areas, be maintained?

Vacuum the full surface regularly on low suction without a beater bar. The pale blush and silver-grey silk zones show soiling more readily than the darker areas. Blot any spill immediately with a dry cloth, working inward from the edge. Do not apply water or liquid cleaners directly to the silk pile. Professional cleaning is recommended annually.
