Description

A mid-grey and dark charcoal ground carries an all-over scatter of short off-white vertical strokes, distributed across the full field in loose horizontal registers without strict alignment. The strokes vary in height and grouping; some run in tight clusters, others stand isolated. The close-up pile reveals the off-white marks sitting noticeably raised above the compressed grey ground, giving the surface a strong tactile contrast between mark and field.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Dash · the asked & answered
How does the raised off-white mark construction hold up where foot traffic is heaviest?

The off-white strokes sit higher in the pile and carry more surface contact than the compressed ground between them. In high-traffic zones, these raised marks will show compression before the ground does. Vacuuming on low suction after regular use helps the marks recover their height. Rotating the rug annually distributes traffic across the full scatter pattern rather than concentrating wear on any single zone.

Does the scattered mark distribution mean the rug looks the same from all sides?

The marks distribute in loose horizontal registers rather than a symmetrical pattern, so there is a subtle directional quality to the surface. It does not have a strict top or bottom, but orienting the rug so the horizontal register runs across the width of the room, parallel to the primary sofa, gives the scatter its most natural reading from a seated position.

What type of room and furniture combination works best with this rug's surface character?

The raised off-white marks against a dark grey ground carry strong visual contrast, which works best in rooms where other surfaces are quieter in tone. Pale upholstery, raw timber furniture, and light walls allow the rug to hold the floor without competing with the rest of the room. The 10x14 suits a curved sofa and accent chair arrangement in a generous open-plan space; the 9x12 anchors a more contained living room comfortably.
