Description

Near-black and dark charcoal carry the ground while short vertical strokes in mid-grey, silver, and off-white run densely across the full field in horizontal bands. The strokes vary in height and spacing, giving each band a different density of mark. Off-white appears in concentrated clusters at irregular intervals, pulling forward against the near-black ground. The close-up pile reveals significant textural variation between the raised stroke marks and the compressed dark ground between them.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Pitch · the asked & answered
How does the mark density variation across the bands affect how the rug wears under foot traffic?

Bands with denser marks carry more pile per unit area and resist compression more than the sparser bands. Over time, traffic tends to flatten the denser zones slightly more visibly, which can reduce the contrast between marks and ground in those areas. Annual rotation redistributes traffic across the full band sequence and keeps the surface reading consistently.

Does the near-black ground work in a room that already has dark walls or dark concrete floors?

A dark ground rug against dark floors can read as a tonal field rather than a defined surface. Using a rug pad with a contrasting edge, or placing the rug on a lighter floor section if the room has both, helps define the rug's boundary. The off-white and silver marks carry enough contrast to give the rug visual presence even in a predominantly dark room.

What size suits a large, high-ceiling open-plan living room with minimal furniture?

The 10x14 anchors a minimal seating arrangement in a large open-plan space without the rug disappearing into the floor. In a high-ceiling room, a larger rug grounds the seating zone and gives the space a defined floor plane. Front legs of all seating on the rug keeps the arrangement connected to the surface and prevents the rug from floating in the open plan.
