Description

A warm amber-brown ground carries a large stepped diamond medallion outlined in ivory-cream, with two nested slate-grey diamonds at its center forming a stacked vertical axis. The close-up shows strong abrash across the brown field, its tone shifting between honey-gold and deeper raw sienna within a single viewing distance. No secondary field figures interrupt the open ground around the medallion.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Tawny · the asked & answered
Is the tonal variation in the brown field a defect, and does it shift further with wear?

The tonal variation is abrash, an inherent characteristic of hand-knotted wool construction. Natural fiber absorbs dye in slightly different concentrations across a large surface, producing ground shifts that are intentional and expected. This does not worsen with regular use and does not indicate inconsistent quality.

How does the amber-brown and grey palette work in a room with warm timber floors and grey upholstery?

The amber-brown ground connects directly to warm timber tones, reading as an extension of the floor material. The slate-grey medallion center provides the cooler note that grey upholstery can anchor to. At 9x12 or 10x14, the full medallion remains visible between furniture legs, making the three-color relationship legible from any seat in the room.

How much shedding should be expected from this all-wool rug in the first year?

Medium-pile all-wool hand-knotted rugs release loose surface fibers during the first three to six months of regular use. Vacuum on low suction without a beater bar two to three times weekly during this period. Shedding reduces significantly after the break-in phase and stops entirely within the first year under normal conditions.
