Description

Medium grey grounds a continuous all-over field of small-scale star florals, ivory snowflake rosettes, and terracotta red paisley forms that distribute evenly across the surface without concentrating toward a center. A narrow terracotta border carries a minimal geometric repeat that closes the composition without competing with the field. The close-up pile shows motif edges that hold definition clearly against the grey, ivory reading with particular brightness.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Holm · the asked & answered
How does a small-scale all-over pattern read under a large sectional sofa arrangement?

Small-scale all-over patterns read as a consistent textured surface from a distance, which works well under large furniture. The pattern does not require a clear sightline to a central motif to read correctly, so sectionals and full seating arrangements that cover portions of the field do not compromise the design's visual logic.

Does the terracotta border help define the rug's edge on a warm wood floor?

The narrow terracotta border sits in the same warm register as most wood tones, which creates a gradual rather than sharp transition at the rug's edge. The grey field provides the visual separation from the floor. In rooms with pale or blonde wood, the contrast is cleaner; in rooms with darker walnut or teak, the transition is more blended.

Is a low-pile hand-knotted wool rug suitable for a dining room with upholstered chairs?

Low pile is well suited to dining rooms because chair legs move across the surface without catching or snagging raised pile. The hand-knotted construction holds the weave structure securely under repeated chair movement. Felt pads under chair legs reduce localized abrasion on the pile over time.
