Description

Graphite grounds a vine-and-floral all-over field where silver-grey florals and ivory connecting scrolls distribute continuously across a surface that reads as nearly monochromatic from a distance. A wide silver-grey border carries its own floral scroll repeat, stepping the composition from the dark interior to a lighter outer frame. The close-up pile reveals the field's tonal depth: the vine structure dissolves into the graphite ground while the floral heads hold just enough definition to register as pattern rather than texture.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Knap · the asked & answered
How does a near-monochromatic graphite rug read in a room with pale blonde wood flooring?

The contrast between a dark graphite ground and pale blonde wood creates a clean visual boundary that defines the seating zone with clear authority. The silver-grey border softens the transition at the rug's outer edge. White or cream upholstery above the rug completes the tonal range of the room without requiring additional color.

Does a low-pile wool rug in dark graphite show lint or light debris readily?

Dark grounds show pale debris more readily than mid-tones. Weekly vacuuming on low suction without a beater bar keeps the surface clear. The low pile does not trap debris deeply, which makes routine maintenance straightforward. The matte finish does not amplify the visibility of surface lint the way a higher-sheen surface would.

What is the benefit of a tonal, near-monochromatic pattern in a room that already has strong decorative elements?

A tonal pattern provides visual structure and classical order without introducing competing color. In a room with strong art, statement furniture, or bold architectural features, a graphite-on-graphite rug anchors the floor and gives the space its footing without drawing the eye away from the room's primary points of interest. The pattern reads as texture from across the room, which is exactly its function.
