Description

A powder-blue ground carries an allover field of scalloped medallion forms in soft grey-taupe, each one filled with small floral heads and outlined in near-black charcoal. Warm straw-beige and ivory accent the motifs throughout. The outer border runs dark charcoal with a dense geometric pattern, contrasting with the open, pale quality of the field it frames.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Scalloway · the asked & answered
Does the natural dye variation in the blue ground affect the rug's durability or evenness over time?

The tonal variation in the powder-blue ground comes from how wool absorbs dye during hand production, not from uneven wear or fading. It is a characteristic of the construction, not a defect. The wool pile holds its colour well under indoor conditions. Keeping the rug out of direct sustained sunlight preserves the blue ground across all zones.

The allover medallion repeat is quite structured. How should furniture be placed to respect the pattern?

The repeat works in any furniture arrangement since it has no single focal axis. For the 9x12, front legs of the main sofa sitting on the field keeps the border fully visible. The 10x14 suits larger seating groups placed fully within the field. The dark charcoal border reads best when all four sides remain unobstructed by furniture.

Will this all-wool rug shed, and how long does it take to settle?

Light shedding in the first few weeks is normal for hand-knotted wool. This comes from loose fibres released during production and reduces significantly after regular vacuuming. Use low suction without a beater bar. The pile settles and stabilises within the first month of use, after which maintenance is straightforward.
