Description

Dark chocolate-brown fills the field entirely, with a dense all-over vine scroll carrying large rounded floral forms in ivory-cream, dusty rose-pink, and sage-olive. The motifs sit full and close together, leaving little ground visible. Powder-blue accents appear selectively inside the larger blooms. The close-up shows medium-high pile with a slightly textured, matte wool surface.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Thorn · the asked & answered
With such a dense, all-over pattern on a dark field, how does this rug wear in a high-use living room?

The all-over design actually helps here. In a dense pattern, everyday wear and minor soiling distribute evenly across the surface rather than concentrating in visible areas. Wool at medium-high pile height also recovers well from foot traffic with regular low-suction vacuuming.

What size works best, and how should furniture be arranged on a rug with this much visual weight?

A 9x12 or 10x14 gives the large-scale floral pattern enough room to read as a full composition. In a living room, placing all major seating legs on the rug anchors the arrangement and prevents the pattern from being partially cut off at the furniture line.

Does the dark brown ground show fading or colour change over time?

Deep-dyed wool grounds can soften slightly in areas of consistent direct sun exposure over several years. Rotating the rug every 12 months distributes any fading evenly. Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight where possible; this preserves both the ground tone and the lighter fill colors in the florals.
