Description

Pale powder-blue and warm straw-yellow occupy large, diffuse zones across a mid-grey wool ground, with crimson-red breaking through in irregular bursts that concentrate without massing. Dusty blush and sand-beige surface between the dominant tones. The close-up shows the hi-low construction at a medium register: silk carries the blue and red passages at a raised pile, wool holds the grey and straw tones lower and flatter.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Thaw · the asked & answered
The crimson passages are silk and concentrated in specific areas. Will those zones show wear differently from the broader blue and grey fields?

Silk holds color well but is more surface-exposed than wool at the lower pile. The crimson passages benefit from consistent rotation every 12 months to prevent any one area from bearing concentrated foot traffic. The broader blue and grey zones, covering more of the field, distribute wear more evenly by nature.

Does this palette work in an open-plan space that combines a kitchen and living area?

The mid-grey ground and pale blue work well against concrete, polished stone, or pale timber kitchen floors. The straw-yellow and sand-beige tones complement warm wood cabinetry. The 10x14 defines the living zone clearly in an open-plan arrangement without the design conflicting with adjacent kitchen materials.

With so many tones present, is this rug difficult to pair with patterned upholstery or wall treatments?

The mid-grey ground provides a strong neutral anchor. Plain linen, cotton, or leather upholstery in grey, sand, or cognac lets the rug carry the color without competition. Heavily patterned upholstery can make the room visually busy; solid tones pulled from the rug's palette work best alongside it.
