Description

Terracotta-rust and dark slate-teal move through each other across an off-white and pale silver ground in large, interlocking forms with no fixed edges. Sage-green surfaces between them in mid-toned passages; near-black concentrates where the teal deepens. The close-up reveals all four tones carried in silk at the higher pile, with the pale ground receding into wool beneath.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Tarn · the asked & answered
The terracotta and teal are opposite tones. Does the hi-low construction help them coexist without the surface reading as visually chaotic?

The construction places both colors at the same pile elevation, so neither physically dominates the other. The off-white wool ground receding beneath them provides separation. From a normal viewing distance the two tones read as a composition rather than a conflict, particularly where the pale passages between them give the eye a place to rest.

What furniture tones work best with this terracotta and teal palette?

Warm cognac leather and walnut timber respond naturally to the terracotta passages. Linen or cotton upholstery in off-white or warm oat keeps the pale ground tone present in the furniture. Olive green accents in ceramics or soft furnishings pick up the sage passages. The 10x14 gives a full seating group the room to sit within the full color field.

Does the pale off-white wool ground between the color zones show soiling more than the darker silk areas?

Pale wool is more susceptible to visible surface dust and spills than darker tones. The off-white passages in this design appear where the silk coverage thins, so they are distributed across the field rather than concentrated in one zone. Regular low-suction vacuuming and immediate blotting of spills keeps these areas reading cleanly.
