Description

A near-black charcoal ground carries horizontal bands of off-white marks running the full width of the field: zigzag lines, scattered dots, short vertical strokes, comb-like fringe rows, and dash sequences. The bands differ from one another in mark type and density, giving the surface a register-like structure. Vertical lines divide the field into loose columns without fully interrupting the horizontal flow. The blended fibre pile sits flat and close, with the off-white marks reading crisply against the dark ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Tally · the asked & answered
How do the off-white mark details hold their definition in the pile over time?

The marks sit in a medium-low pile against a dark ground, which keeps the contrast between them clear even after regular use. Blended fibres at this pile height resist flattening well. Vacuuming on low suction in the direction of the pile maintains mark definition. Annual rotation prevents concentrated wear from softening specific bands more than others.

Does the horizontal band structure work better oriented in a particular direction in a living room?

Yes. The bands read most naturally when running across the width of the room rather than front to back, which means orienting the rug so the horizontal marks run parallel to the primary sofa. This allows the full register sequence to be seen from a seated position. The 9x12 suits most living rooms; the 10x14 gives the band structure more room to read in full.

Does the dark charcoal ground show lint and light debris visibly?

A near-black ground picks up light-coloured debris more readily than a pale or mid-tone surface. Regular low-suction vacuuming manages this effectively. The medium-low pile means debris tends to sit on the surface rather than embedding deeply, making maintenance straightforward. Professional cleaning once a year keeps the charcoal ground reading at full depth.
