A near-black charcoal ground carries horizontal bands of off-white marks running the full width of the field: zigzag lines, scattered dots, short vertical strokes, comb-like fringe rows, and dash sequences. The bands differ from one another in mark type and density, giving the surface a register-like structure. Vertical lines divide the field into loose columns without fully interrupting the horizontal flow. The blended fibre pile sits flat and close, with the off-white marks reading crisply against the dark ground.
PLATE II — OF VII▸ TallyThe red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.
