Pale ivory and soft warm-white hold the ground across most of the surface. Two large near-black brushstroke forms move through the centre without following any grid, one sweeping vertically, one arcing across it. A worn rectangular field in sand-grey and ice-blue sits behind the strokes. The hi-low construction raises the silk in the black zones, making the marks press visibly above the flat ivory ground.
PLATE II — OF VII▸ StrokeThe red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.
