Description

Pale ivory and soft warm-white hold the ground across most of the surface. Two large near-black brushstroke forms move through the centre without following any grid, one sweeping vertically, one arcing across it. A worn rectangular field in sand-grey and ice-blue sits behind the strokes. The hi-low construction raises the silk in the black zones, making the marks press visibly above the flat ivory ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Stroke · the asked & answered
How does the raised silk in the dark stroke zones hold up under normal living room use?

The wool ground carries the structural load of foot traffic, while the raised silk in the stroke zones sees less direct compression. The relief between the black marks and the ivory field remains defined under normal living room use. Positioning furniture to avoid placing heavy legs directly on the raised silk zones extends the hi-low contrast over time.

What room scale suits this design, and how should it be sized?

The composition is built around two large crossing marks that read best from a distance and from above. The 10x14 gives the strokes room to be fully seen within a large living space, where the rug can be viewed from across the room. The 9x12 works in a room where a single seating group faces the marks without covering the primary intersection point.

Can the dark silk zones be spot-treated if something spills on them?

Blot the area immediately with a clean dry cloth. The dark silk in the stroke zones is dense and closely knotted; pressing without rubbing removes surface moisture without pulling at the pile. Do not apply water or cleaning solution directly. Any spill that reaches the pile base should be referred to a professional cleaner with silk pile experience before further treatment at home.
