Description

Burnt-orange and deep wine-red move across the field in broken horizontal striations over a mid-grey and off-white wool ground. Powder-blue runs along the upper edge; amber-gold and dusty mauve appear as minor accents between the dominant warm bands. Silk carries the orange and red passages at a higher pile, making the warm striations physically stand above the cooler ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Streak · the asked & answered
The burnt-orange and red silk bands are raised above the wool ground. Do they risk snagging under low-profile furniture with metal legs?

The pile height difference in a hi-low construction is measured in millimeters and does not create a snagging risk under normal furniture contact. Thin metal legs sitting directly on silk passages benefit from felt pads to distribute point load. Dragging furniture across the surface should always be avoided regardless of pile type.

Does the horizontal striation pattern create a directional effect? Should the long axis run parallel to the sofa?

The horizontal bands read most naturally when the long axis of the rug runs parallel to the primary seating. This positions the striations across the field of view rather than toward it. In rooms where the sofa faces across the width of the rug, the bands still read clearly but feel more compressed.

How do the minor accent colors, the mauve and amber-gold, contribute to the design? Do they affect furniture pairing choices?

The mauve and amber-gold appear in small quantities and act as tonal bridges between the grey ground and the warm red bands. They do not read as dominant from a distance. Rooms with warm amber or terracotta accessories pick up the gold; rooms with cooler stone tones align with the grey and blue passages. Either approach works without the accent tones competing.
