Description

Navy and near-black run in strong vertical bands across a mid-grey and steel-blue ground, with off-white breaking through the darker passages in scattered, eroded clusters. Moss-gold and olive appear at irregular intervals between the bands, silk-knotted and rising above the wool ground. The vertical structure dominates the full field with no border and no interruption.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Plank · the asked & answered
How does the vertical band structure affect wear patterns over time in a living room?

The bands run the full length of the rug, so foot traffic tends to fall consistently across multiple zones rather than concentrating on a single motif. Wool handles this well. The silk clusters in the moss-gold and off-white areas sit higher and are more sensitive; rotating the rug every twelve months redistributes traffic and keeps the pile elevation even across the surface.

How should this rug be oriented and sized for a room with a primary sofa along one wall?

Orient the rug so the vertical bands run parallel to the length of the sofa, which reinforces the linear character of the design. The 9x12 suits most standard living rooms with a three-seat sofa and two accent chairs. The 10x14 works in larger open-plan spaces where the full band structure can be seen across the room from a seated position.

Can this rug be cleaned at home, or does it require professional care?

Routine maintenance, low-suction vacuuming and prompt blotting of spills, can be done at home. Avoid steam cleaning or saturating the surface with water, as this can affect both the wool and silk fibers. Professional dry cleaning once a year keeps the pile in good condition and preserves the sheen of the silk sections without stressing the knots.
