Description

Near-black dominates here, more so than in any other piece in this collection. Brick-red, olive-gold, cerulean-blue, and off-white cut through it in large diagonal bands that cross the field without completing their paths. The close-up reveals the hi-low construction at full contrast: silk carries the cerulean and off-white at a noticeably higher pile, pulling them above the dense near-black wool ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Oblique · the asked & answered
The near-black ground covers most of the surface. How does dark wool perform under furniture and foot traffic over time?

Dark wool is among the most resilient pile surfaces in terms of wear visibility. It resists showing compression marks and traffic patterns better than lighter tones. The lower pile position of the wool in this hi-low construction further reduces surface exposure. Rotating every 12 months keeps wear distribution even.

What kind of room architecture suits a predominantly dark rug of this scale?

High ceilings, large windows, and pale walls give the design the space it needs. Concrete, polished stone, or light marble floors prevent the room from reading as heavy. The 10x14 works best here; in smaller sizes the dark field can compress the room visually.

The silk passages are raised above the near-black wool. Does that height difference snag or catch on furniture legs?

The pile height difference in a hi-low construction is measured in millimeters and does not snag under normal conditions. Furniture legs placed directly on silk passages benefit from coasters to distribute weight. Avoid dragging furniture across the surface when rearranging the room.
