Description

A near-black and dark charcoal blended ground carries a barely-visible all-over pattern of overlapping diamond and chevron forms in warm stone-grey. The pattern does not announce itself; it surfaces and submerges as the viewing angle shifts. No border frames the field. The close-up reveals the design as a tonal mark within the pile, the stone-grey sitting just above the darker charcoal ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

On scale

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Murk · the asked & answered
The pattern is nearly invisible at low contrast. Does this rug still read as a designed surface rather than a plain dark field?

At a normal standing or seated distance, the surface carries enough variation to read as intentional rather than flat. The blended fibre ground shifts between near-black and dark charcoal, and the stone-grey pattern surfaces at certain angles. In rooms with strong natural or directional artificial light, the design becomes more legible. In dimmer conditions it reads primarily as a rich dark texture.

This is a very dark rug. How does it perform practically in a well-used living room?

Dark blended fibre grounds show pale surface dust more readily than mid-toned ones. Regular low-suction vacuuming keeps the surface reading cleanly. The construction handles moderate foot traffic well. A quality rug pad beneath helps with grip on polished concrete or stone floors, which this design typically sits on.

What upholstery and accent tones work best against a near-black field?

Terracotta, burnt orange, and warm rust provide strong contrast without fighting the ground tone. Pale linen and off-white read clearly and lighten the room. The lifestyle shot demonstrates this well: a deep rust sectional against the near-black field creates enough contrast that neither dominates. Avoid very dark upholstery in the same tonal range as the rug, as the two surfaces merge visually.
