Description

Medium cobalt-blue holds the field in a dense Mahal-derived all-over composition of large floral medallion rosettes, scrolling vine work, and palmette forms in brick-red, saffron-gold, off-white, and deep navy. A dark indigo-navy border carries a full vine-and-flower repeat in gold and red. The wool pile sits at medium height, and horizontal abrash moves through the field in tonal shifts between lighter and deeper blue.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Mahalfield · the asked & answered
With so many colours in the field, how does the design hold together visually over time?

The scrolling vine structure connects every motif into a single continuous composition. As the wool settles with use, the colours mature rather than fade, and the connection between motifs becomes more apparent rather than less. Wool dyed before knotting holds its colour at the fibre level; the brick-red, gold, and off-white remain stable under normal residential use.

What size suits a large living room with a sectional sofa and multiple chairs?

The 10x14 suits a room where a full sectional and additional chairs all sit within the perimeter, giving the all-over field composition room to be read without furniture covering the primary motifs. The 9x12 works where a single large sofa and two chairs form the main arrangement. The cobalt field reads well against polished concrete and pale stone floors, as shown in the room context.

How does this densely patterned wool construction perform in a dining room under a table?

Wool at medium pile height handles chair movement and regular traffic well. The dense knot structure in a traditional all-over composition distributes wear evenly across the surface rather than concentrating it in any one zone. Annual rotation and low-suction vacuuming maintain the pile. The size should allow at least 60cm of rug beyond the table edge on all sides so chairs remain on the surface when pulled out.
