Description

An ivory field carries a large-scale botanical scroll of oversized lobed leaves, elephant figures, lion forms, and full-bloom rosettes in crimson, steel blue, warm gold, dusty terracotta, and near-black. The vine runs loosely, leaving open ivory ground between the motifs. The near-black border holds a dense secondary scroll in ivory and steel blue with a terracotta guard stripe. Medium pile reads open and full-bodied in the close-up.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

How are figurative motifs like animals achieved in hand-knotted wool construction?

Figurative forms require individual color changes at each knot, allowing the weaver to render outlines, internal detail, and shading within a single motif. The resolution of animal figures in this design depends entirely on the hand-knotting process; no machine or tufted method can achieve the same definition at this scale.

Does the open ivory field with large-scale motifs require a specific minimum size to read the full design?

The large-scale motifs read best when the full field is visible from the room's main sightline. The 9x12 allows the full botanical and figurative repeat to be seen from a seated position. The 10x14 gives more floor clearance around the seating group and lets the near-black border read as a complete frame. The 8x10 works in rooms where a portion of the repeat is acceptable.

How does an ivory ground with crimson and near-black motifs work in a room with pink-toned walls?

The ivory ground connects naturally with pale pink or plaster-toned walls because both share a warm, low-saturation base. The crimson and steel blue motifs provide enough contrast to define the rug independently without competing with a pink wall, as the room context demonstrates.
