Description

Pale warm-white holds nearly the entire surface, with rectangular forms in soft greige, blush-grey, and pale gold-yellow receding into the ground rather than sitting above it. Two narrow vertical lines in deep burgundy-rust appear at separate intervals, the only elements that hold clear definition. The hi-low construction keeps most of the design submerged within the silk ground, revealing itself slowly at close range.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

On scale

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Groundfog · the asked & answered
With such a pale ground, how does this silk and wool surface resist showing marks from foot traffic?

The eroded, textured quality of the silk surface works in its favour here. Minor surface compression from foot traffic blends into the existing texture rather than reading as a distinct mark. Regular low-suction vacuuming keeps the pile upright and the ground reading evenly. Annual rotation prevents any one zone from developing a worn path that reads differently from the rest.

What size and placement works best in an open-plan living and dining space?

The 10x14 suits an open-plan room where both the living and dining zones share the floor, as seen in the room context. The pale ground reads continuously under different furniture groupings without disrupting the room's visual flow. The 9x12 anchors a single seating arrangement where the full width of the surface sits within the furniture perimeter.

How should this pale silk surface be maintained to keep the ground reading cleanly over time?

Vacuum on the lowest suction setting in the direction of the pile only. The pale ground will show surface dust before colour rugs of similar construction; weekly light vacuuming keeps it clear. Blot spills immediately without rubbing. Annual professional cleaning by a silk specialist is essential for this colourway to preserve the ground tone and the hi-low texture.
