Description

Broad gestural marks in slate-blue grey and near-black move across an ivory-cream ground without fixed direction. Warm amber-ochre traces follow the curves of the larger marks, and a single faded rose passage sits in the lower left field. The hi-low construction raises the pale ivory ground in silk while the wool holds the denser grey and black zones in a lower, heavier register.

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

The dark grey and black zones are dense. Do they hold their colour depth over regular use?

Wool at the lower pile plane holds pigment well and resists fading under normal indoor use. The darker zones, being wool-knotted, maintain their depth better than lighter areas over time. Rotating the rug annually and keeping it out of direct sustained sunlight preserves colour across the full surface.

What size and room type suits the scale of this design best?

The 10x14 allows the full gestural composition to read as intended, particularly in rooms with high ceilings or large open-plan arrangements. The 9x12 works in standard living rooms where the rug anchors a central seating group. This design benefits from being seen from a distance as well as from above.

How should the ivory silk ground be maintained given the contrast with the darker marks?

Regular vacuuming on low suction without a beater bar keeps the pale silk ground free of surface dust. The contrast between the ivory and the dark marks makes debris more visible on the lighter zones. Blot any spill immediately with a dry cloth.
