Description

A fine geometric lattice of interlocking octagons, cross-forms, and diamond units covers the full field in off-white and warm stone-grey, interrupted across the center by broad vertical erosion zones in dark espresso-brown and cool dusty-blue where the pattern partially dissolves. The close-up reveals two distinct surface registers: dense, resolved geometric line work on the outer sections and broken, granular texture in the eroded center zones. No border. The pattern runs edge to edge.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Fretted · the asked & answered
Does the intentional erosion pattern in the center of this rug affect its structural durability?

No. The dissolved appearance in the center zones is a design feature built into the knotting itself, not a result of wear or thinning pile. The knot density is consistent across the full field. The eroded visual quality comes from deliberate color and texture variation in the fiber, not from reduced construction integrity.

What orientation works best for this rug in a living room with a sofa and low coffee table?

Orient the rug so the vertical erosion zones run parallel to the sofa's long axis. This keeps the resolved geometric sections visible at the left and right of the seating group while the dissolved center reads beneath the coffee table. The 9x12 or 10x14 gives enough field for the full pattern contrast to register from a seated position.

How does the silk content in the resolved geometric sections affect routine cleaning?

The silk sections carry the finer line work and sit at a slightly different elevation from the wool ground. Use a vacuum on low suction without a beater bar, working with the pile direction. Avoid high-suction passes directly over the silk-dominant sections. Annual professional cleaning by a specialist in wool and silk rugs maintains both fiber types without disrupting the contrast between the resolved and eroded zones.
