Pale silver-grey holds the ground, divided into loosely defined rectangular fields of dusty blush-pink, warm sand-ochre, soft celadon-green, and near-black charcoal. Thin dark lines traverse the zones without following the field boundaries. The hi-low construction raises the silk where the colour fields sit densest, giving each zone its own surface relief against the worn grey ground between them.
PLATE II — OF VII▸ FrescoThe red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.
