Description

Cobalt-blue dominates the full field, with ivory-white and dark charcoal-brown breaking through in irregular horizontal bands that give the surface a loose, flowing structure. No border, no motif. The close-up confirms a low, tightly compressed wool pile where all three colors sit interlocked at the fiber level, the cobalt accounting for the majority of the surface at every point. A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

This rug is predominantly one color. Does that make it harder or easier to place in a furnished room?

Easier, in most cases. A dominant cobalt field with no competing pattern reads as a grounding element rather than a focal point. Rooms with warm neutrals, natural wood, leather, or earthy greens accommodate it well. The white and charcoal threads in the pile add enough surface variation that the rug does not read as flat or one-dimensional in a furnished space.

How does a saturated cobalt all-wool surface perform in a large living room with a full seating arrangement?

A 10x14 gives the field enough surface area to read as a deliberate floor decision rather than just a rug. With all furniture legs on the surface, the cobalt reads as a continuous base beneath the arrangement. The low pile handles regular foot traffic without compressing or matting, and the matte finish distributes wear evenly across the field.

Does heavy cobalt dye in wool affect how the rug feels underfoot or how it wears over time?

Deep-dyed wool feels the same underfoot as undyed wool of the same pile height. The dye penetrates the full fiber length during processing, so it does not sit on the surface or affect texture. Over time, cobalt in wool holds well indoors. Prolonged direct sunlight is the main risk for fading; rotating the rug annually distributes any exposure evenly.
