Description

A pale warm-ivory ground carries a sparse composition of long, slightly irregular dark charcoal lines dividing the field into large asymmetric vertical and horizontal planes. The lines run the full length or width of the field in most cases, some veering slightly off vertical, meeting at stepped junctions rather than clean intersections. Two small closed rectangles sit in the upper-centre field. A dark charcoal border frames the full perimeter in a rough, hand-drawn line.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Fault · the asked & answered
How do the incised charcoal lines maintain their definition in a high-pile surface over time?

The charcoal channels sit compressed within the high pile, and the surrounding dense ivory pile can lean into the channels under foot pressure, softening their edges gradually. Vacuuming against the pile direction along the channel lines occasionally helps push the pile walls back and keeps the lines reading clearly. Professional cleaning once a year restores the full pile density and channel definition across the surface.

Does the sparse composition mean the rug needs a large room to read well?

The design works best when seen from a distance of at least two to three metres, which allows the full plane structure and line composition to read as intended. In a small room, the lines may appear too close to the viewer for the composition to register properly. The 10x14 gives the design the most room to work; the 9x12 suits a standard living room where the rug can be seen from the full length of a seated arrangement.

How should spills be managed on a pale high-pile blended fibre surface?

Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, pressing firmly without rubbing. The high pile density means liquid can reach the base of the pile quickly if not addressed fast. For coloured spills, cold water blotted repeatedly helps dilute and lift the stain. Avoid hot water or detergent on the surface without professional guidance. Annual professional cleaning keeps the pale ground reading consistently across the full field.
