Description

Cool silver-grey and pale warm-white hold the ground, marked by a near-black border running along the lower and side edges. Within the field, thin charcoal lines form loose rectangular outlines at irregular intervals, with small patches of terracotta-red and dense near-black sitting at the intersections. The hi-low construction raises the silk in the darker zones, giving the marks physical presence above the eroded grey ground.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Edgeknot · the asked & answered
How does the dark border along the edges hold up under furniture placement and regular use?

The border is knotted into the construction rather than applied separately, so it holds its definition under normal furniture placement. Chair and sofa legs placed along the rug's perimeter will sit on the border zone; using furniture pads distributes that weight and prevents concentrated compression on the silk pile in those areas.

What size and room type suits this design best?

The 9x12 works well in a living room where a sofa and two chairs sit within the perimeter, allowing the full field of marks and the dark border to be seen from the seating position. The 10x14 suits a larger open-plan room where the rug is also visible from a standing position across the space, as shown in the room context. The pale grey-white ground reads well against polished concrete floors.

How should the terracotta-red silk patches be maintained to keep their colour reading clearly?

The terracotta colour is dyed into the silk yarn before knotting and holds at the fibre level. Regular low-suction vacuuming in the direction of the pile keeps the raised patches clear of surface dust, which can dull their appearance over time. Annual professional cleaning preserves both the colour intensity and the hi-low relief between the red patches and the surrounding ground.
