Description

A pale silver-grey field carries a large-scale medallion structure drawn in warm camel-tan, dusty sage-olive, and powder-blue, outlined throughout in terracotta-red. The medallion forms sit soft and partially dissolved against the ground, with abrash shifting the grey field between cool slate and warm stone across the surface. The close-up confirms medium-low pile with a matte, slightly worn texture where silk threads catch the outlined edges.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Drift · the asked & answered
The medallion outlines appear in terracotta-red against a grey field. Does that contrast read as bold in a room?

Less than the images suggest. The abrash in the grey ground and the softness of the medallion edges reduce the visual weight of the red outlines considerably. In a room context, the red reads as a drawing line rather than a color statement, particularly against warm wood floors or stone surfaces.

This rug has a large-scale medallion. What room size and furniture arrangement suits it best?

A 9x12 or 10x14 gives the medallion structure enough space to read as a full composition from a standing position. In a living room, centering the medallion under a coffee table with seating arranged symmetrically around it works well. The dissolved edges of the medallion mean furniture partially covering it does not interrupt the design.

How does the wool and silk surface hold up with regular vacuuming on a pale grey ground?

Low-suction vacuuming once a week keeps the pale ground clear of surface debris without stressing the silk threads. Avoid using a beater bar directly on the pile. The matte, slightly worn surface texture of this rug means minor flattening from foot traffic distributes evenly and is less visible than it would be on a high-sheen surface.
