Description

Deep crimson and wine-red move vertically across the field in long, dripping striations over a steel-grey and off-white wool ground. The movement here is distinctly downward; red runs from top to bottom in broken trails that pool and scatter. Dusty rose silk surfaces between the deeper crimson passages, adding a lighter mid-tone that keeps the red from reading as a single flat mass.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

The design has a strong vertical direction. Does the rug need to be oriented a specific way in the room?

The vertical red trails read most naturally when the long axis of the rug runs perpendicular to the primary seating, so the movement runs away from the sofa toward the opposite wall. Rotating the orientation 90 degrees converts the vertical trails into horizontal striations, which changes the design's character significantly.

Red dominates most of the field. What wall and furniture tones allow the grey to still register in the room?

Pale plaster, off-white, or warm cream walls allow the steel-grey passages to read clearly without being absorbed by the wall tone. Cream or linen upholstery on the sofa reinforces the off-white ground. Dark walnut or black metal furniture frames let the red carry without adding warmth that competes with it.
