Description

Pale stone-grey and raw linen hold the ground, with vertical columns of saffron-gold and deep burgundy-crimson moving through the surface in eroded, irregular streaks. The hi-low construction raises the silk where the colour concentrates, so the gold and crimson zones sit visibly above the worn grey field. Up close, the wool beneath reads like weathered plaster.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Bring the room into the rug - never the other way around.

A rug is sized to read once, in full, as you walk past it. The longer sizes tell a different story across a whole room.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Columnwear · the asked & answered
How does the hi-low silk and wool construction behave underfoot over time?

The wool pile forms the base plane and takes the weight of foot traffic. Silk sits above it in the raised zones and sees less direct compression. Over time, the low wool field may soften slightly while the raised silk areas retain their structure. This gradual difference between planes is a natural characteristic of the construction, not a flaw.

What placement and sizing works best for a large living area?

The vertical composition in this design reads most fully from a distance, making the 10x14 the most suitable size for a large living room with multiple seating pieces. The full span of the gold and crimson columns becomes legible when the rug is viewed from across the room. The 9x12 suits rooms where a single seating group defines the space.

How should spills on the silk zones be handled?

Blot immediately with a clean dry cloth, pressing firmly without rubbing. Rubbing will push liquid into the silk pile and can damage the fibre. Do not use water directly on silk areas. For anything beyond a surface blot, contact a professional cleaner with experience in silk pile rugs before attempting further treatment.
