Description

Dark charcoal-grey holds the field, carrying a full Khotan-derived composition of scattered floral sprigs, two medallion roundels, and Greek-key corner devices in off-white and pale sand-ochre. The multi-border frame runs in chevron, stepped, and geometric bands. Horizontal abrash moves through the dark ground in bands of mid-grey and lighter slate, giving the surface its settled, varied character.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Cairn · the asked & answered
Is the tonal variation across the dark ground a defect or an intended quality?

The horizontal abrash, where the ground shifts between charcoal, mid-grey, and slate across the field, is a natural result of how wool takes dye during the making process. It is not a defect. It is the quality that gives this construction its settled, non-mechanical character. Each rug carries its own specific variation within this range.

What size works best for a large living or drawing room with a full seating arrangement?

The 10x14 suits a room where a large sectional or two facing sofas sit within the rug's perimeter, as shown in the room context. The full border composition and field layout read most completely at this scale. The 9x12 anchors a standard three-piece arrangement with front furniture legs on the surface. Runners suit hallways where the border repeat can run at full length.

How does an all-wool antique-finished rug hold up over many years of use?

Wool at medium pile height is among the most durable constructions for residential use. The antique finish, achieved through the making process rather than chemical treatment, does not affect the fibre's structural integrity. With annual rotation and regular low-suction vacuuming, this construction develops evenly and holds its surface quality over decades of normal use.
