Description

Warm stone-grey and pale ivory share the ground, divided into loosely stacked rectangular zones. Burnt brick-red and near-black charcoal sit within those zones in eroded, dense patches, with thin dark lines crossing the field independently. The hi-low construction raises the silk in the red and black concentrations, making those zones press above the worn grey ground around them.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

How does the hi-low construction hold the contrast between the raised colour zones and the worn ground over time?

The height difference between the raised silk patches and the lower wool ground is built into the knot structure rather than applied to the surface. Under normal living room foot traffic, this contrast remains defined. The eroded texture within each raised zone is an intentional quality of the construction; it does not indicate wear or deterioration.

What size suits a loft-style or industrial living room with multiple seating pieces?

The 10x14 anchors a room where a sofa, two chairs, and a coffee table all sit within the rug's perimeter, as seen in the room context. This allows the full composition of stacked zones and scattered marks to be read from multiple positions. The 9x12 works well where a single primary sofa faces the room and the rug extends generously on all sides.

How should the brick-red silk zones be treated if a spill reaches them?

Blot immediately with a clean dry cloth, pressing firmly without rubbing. The brick-red silk is dyed before knotting and holds its colour at the fibre level, but moisture that sits in the pile can affect the fibre structure over time. Do not apply water or product directly. For any spill that moves beyond the surface, a professional cleaner with silk pile experience should be consulted before further home treatment.
