Description

Mid-grey and pale silver-grey move through each other across the full field, with off-white silk rising through the surface in loose, brush-like marks that suggest movement without describing it. No color outside this tonal range appears anywhere on the surface. The close-up reveals the hi-low construction working at its most restrained: silk and wool in near-matching tones, the contrast between them almost entirely textural.

A note on the dye

Madder root, soaked five days, simmered three.

The red you see in the field is not one red. It is seven dye lots, each pulled at a slightly different hour from the same copper vat,the variation lives only in the wool, never in the recipe.

Asked & answered

Questions you'd want to ask.

Plain answers about the wool, the loom, and what the rug does over years of use.

Ashveil · the asked & answered
With such a tonal, low-contrast palette, does this rug show soiling or footprints more readily than darker designs?

The mid-grey ground is practical in this respect; it sits in a tonal range that neither shows pale dust as readily as dark surfaces nor shows dark soiling as readily as off-white ones. The hi-low construction means the lower wool pile is less exposed than a flat surface. Regular low-suction vacuuming keeps the surface reading cleanly.

This design has no strong color. How does it hold its presence in a room without being overlooked?

The hi-low construction carries the design's presence through texture rather than color. In a room where the floor is seen across an open space, the off-white silk marks catch differently than the wool ground around them, giving the surface movement that reads without demanding attention. The 10x14 gives this quality the most room to register.

Does the near-tonal silk and wool combination require different care than designs with stronger color contrast?

Care requirements are the same as any wool and silk hi-low construction. The tonal similarity between materials does not affect care. Low-suction vacuuming, immediate blotting of spills, and annual professional cleaning apply equally here. Avoid rotating brush heads, which can stress the silk at its higher pile position.
